Helen Frankenthaler: Painting without rules

Overview

The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi (Florence) dedicated to the works of Helen Frankenthaler is a first for Italy: never before had a monographic exhibition been dedicated to this important American artist.
"Painting Without Rules" is the subtitle, which defines the work of one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, who died in 2011.

Born in New York City, to parents of German and Jewish origin, she was the only woman to achieve major breakthroughs in American abstract painting, thanks in part to her innovative technique, colour poured directly on the canvas, with suggestions similar to watercolour and an innovative use of colour. There are no figures, landscapes or objects in Frankenthaler's paintings, only colour that defines and creates emotions.

In addition to her works, created between 1953 and 2002 and coming from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation the rooms of Palazzo Strozzi will also display paintings by artists who were companions in life - such as Robert Motherwell - reference figures - such as Jackson Pollock - or developers of a style - such as Mark Rothko.

Helen Frankenthaler's elegant and colourful paintings can be admired from 27 September 2024 to 26 January 2025.
