San Gimignano

Overview

A medieval town in the hills of Tuscany

It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites that contribute to making Tuscany one of the most visited regions in Italy. A small fortified town halfway between Florence and Siena, San Gimignano is a true medieval jewel that from a distance strikes visitors with its 14 towers that tower over the historic centre and offering evocative views. Not all, however, are accessible to the public.

Those who want to experience the thrill of climbing to the top and enjoy a unique view of the city can count on the Torre Grossa, the tallest tower, looming over Piazza Duomo next to the Town Hall. From there, a visit to the Municipal Museum, rich in works of art and the nearby Cathedral is a must. Also visit the Salvucci Towers, twin square towers that stand in Piazza delle Erbe.

The best way to experience San Gimignano is by wandering through its alleys, and letting yourself be carried away by its exquisitely medieval atmosphere. Of course, tasting the many traditional Tuscan delicacies, from pici with wild boar ragout to cured meats, from schiacciata with olives to the ever-present Tuscan porchetta sandwich.
