Pomarance

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

There is an area in Italy called Devil's Valley due to the presence of boraciferous shower heads and "lagoni" (gaseous emanations from small cavities, usually filled with water), the most evident manifestation of the geothermal activity that characterizes the subsoil: it is here, in this particular and fascinating landscape, that Pomarance is located.

The historic centre is developed around the parish church of St John the Baptist, with its Romanesque façade, which houses a Madonna of the Rosary by Niccolò Cirignani and an Annunciation by Cristoforo Roncalli, local authors known as Pomarancio. Also worth a visit are the districts of Montecerboli and Larderello, where in 1913 the first power plant in the world for the production of electricity from the geothermal resource was activated and where today you can visit the Museum of Geothermal Energy. The Rocca Sillana, which has dominated the entire landscape with its size since the Middle Ages, is also worth a stop.
