Cemetery

Overview

Starting in 1278, Giovanni di Simone built the Monumental Cemetery, which housed an astonishing series of frescoes dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries (Taddeo Gaddi, Andrea Bonaiuti, the Master of the Triumph of Death, Benozzo Gozzoli). Unfortunately, during the Second World War, these precious works suffered severe damage. However, thanks to the delicate restoration work, parts of medieval and early Renaissance paintings were recovered and, with their definitive relocation, returned to decorate the majestic walls of the Cemetery, a place of origin, which only in this way has returned to express its own character, unparalleled for its time and even today. Inside the Cemetery, 84 ancient sarcophagi and numerous medieval funerary monuments are preserved.
