Murlo

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Murlo is a medieval centre that stands on an area that was an Etruscan settlement, overlooking the valley of the Crèvole stream. The ancient origin is witnessed by the works of art and testimonies kept in the Antiquarium of Poggio Civitate, inside the imposing Bishop's Palace. Among the finds, found in the excavations to the south-east of the town, there is also what has become the symbol of Murlo, namely the Cappellone, a famous male statue. Also noteworthy are the famous terracotta statues of figures once positioned above the roof of the building.

Twelfth-century triangular walls completely enclose the historic centre and have been juxtaposed by a contemporary castle, a curtain of buildings and the church of San Fortunato, with a single nave and two seventeenth-century altars.

In the area, the community has implemented an operation to recover, safeguard and enhance anancient variety of native bean, at risk of extinction, the Venanzio Bean, cultivated for at least 150 years. Events include Bluetrusco, which takes place in the second week of July and is linked to knowledge of the Etruscan people.
