Montaione

Overview

The village of Montaione took its name from Allone di Lucca, and was already mentioned as Mons Allonis in medieval times. Since 1200, Montaione was known for the art of glassmaking, which spread from here throughout the Valdelsa. Today, Montaione is a quiet town, with a characteristic, well-preserved historic centre, gathered in an urban layout crossed by three parallel streets, which meet where the town gates once opened. Noteworthy is the 14th-century Palazzo Pretorio on whose façade numerous coats of arms stand out. Montaione is also an ideal destination for lovers of agritourism and the countryside, and it is no coincidence that its main resource is now "green' tourism", which has grown thanks to the recovery of country cottages and small hamlets abandoned in the 1960s, which have now been transformed into charming accommodation facilities.
