Castagneto Carducci

Overview

A small village with ancient traditions, among the best known on the Costa degli Etruschi

The small town of Castagneto is surrounded by cultivated fields, with the characteristic, picture-perfect long avenues lined by the famous cypress trees. Perched on a hill a few kilometres from the sea, the town of Castagneto surrounds the impressive medieval castle, which stands at the highest point of the village.

Originally called Castagneto Marittimo, it changed its name in honour of the great poet Giosuè Carducci, who spent part of his life there. The house where Carducci lived now houses a museum full of memorabilia. Nearby Bolgheri, with its avenue lined by cypress trees that featured in Carducci’s poetry, is an iconic location in the Tuscan countryside, where fine wines including Bolgheri DOC and Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC are produced.
