Castiglione della Pescaia

Overview

Sea, history and a dash of nightlife

Set in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, Castiglione della Pescaia is a renowned tourist resort overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Commercial activities are concentrated in the lower part of the city: Corso della Libertà is the ideal area for shopping.

The village, enclosed by ancient walls, develops in the upper part, along the banks of the Poggio Petriccio hill. Among the monuments of interest in the historical centre is the Church of St John the Baptist, whose bell tower rests on a circular tower. From the medieval Castle, you can enjoy an extraordinary panoramic view of the city and the surrounding area. Few people know that the cemetery in Castiglione della Pescaia houses the tomb of one of the most important authors of the 20th century in Italy, Italo Calvino, who chose the Maremma as his summer residence.

The beaches, such as Ponente or Roccamare, are perfect for families looking for quiet fun, but also for snorkelling enthusiasts. Castiglione della Pescaia's seafront promenade offers relaxing walks and is also one of the meeting points of the Tuscan nightlife: during the summer months there is a wide choice of events, including evenings, live music and DJ sets.
