Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Surrounded by chestnut woods and perched on a pine cone-shaped hill, Castelnuovo di Val Di Cecina is an intact and characteristic village, with narrow and paved stone streets, medieval doors and past on the surrounding valley.

To see the parish church with a crucifix from the early fourteenth century, the Oratory of San Rocco and the Church of the village. The chestnut groves around the village are ideal for hiking, such as that of the Peacock stream which also touches two splendid Renaissance bridges. The hamlets are also interesting: Leccia and Montecastelli are villages for preserved and characteristic, near the hamlet of Sasso, on the other hand, in addition to an archaeological complex with the remains of an ancient Etruscan thermal bath, you can observe the unusual natural phenomena of "puzzze" (cold gas exhalations) and "fumaroles" (gaseous emissions accompanied by steam). These are expressions of the intense geothermal activity that has characterized the subsoil of these areas for millennia and where it is also located.

Geothermal energy has been used in an innovative way by the company Vapori di Birra, the first brewery in the world that produces craft beer using geothermal steam as its primary source of energy.
