Giovanni Fattori Municipal Museum

Overview

The museum is located in the heart of Livorno and bears witness to the rich cultural ferment that swept through the city at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is housed in the elegant Villa Mimbelli which, before becoming a museum house, was the residence of one of the most affluent families in the city.

Inside, the visit is divided between the rooms dedicated to the collections and the rich period rooms, embellished with stuccoes, frescoes and marble floors. At the heart of the museum are the 3 rooms where you can admire the large canvases by Giovanni Fattori, a Livorno-born artist and one of the most important representatives of Macchiaioli painting, flanked by works by Telemaco Signorini, Cristiano Banti, Guglielmo Micheli and many others: a route that offers a broad panorama of 19th and 20th century Italian art. As well as paintings, a large section of the museum houses sculptural works from the same historical period, while other rooms are dedicated to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
