Exhibitions, MarcoPolo700: It Is the Wind that Makes the Sky. The Venice Biennale in the Footsteps of Marco Polo
A Special Project by the Historical Archive of the Venice Biennale commemorating the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death (1324–2024), with significant support from the Italian Cultural Institute in Shanghai and the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai.
The first stage of The Perfect Path was inaugurated on Saturday, November 9, 2024, in Hangzhou—Marco Polo’s "city of heaven." Curated by Luigia Lonardelli with the support of the China Academy of Art, this contemporary art exhibition is located at the Art Museum of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, People’s Republic of China. It will be open from November 10th, 2024, to January 10th, 2025.
This exhibition marks the first stage of the Venice Biennale Historical Archive’s Special Project, titled It Is the Wind that Makes the Sky. The Venice Biennale in the Footsteps of Marco Polo, which revisits Marco Polo’s journey in celebration of the 700th anniversary of his passing. The project has received special support from the Italian Cultural Institute in Shanghai and the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai. This initiative also signals the beginning of a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Venice Biennale and the China Academy of Art (CAA), designed to foster cultural and artistic exchange between Italy and China.
The Perfect Path brings together contemporary works by 18 Chinese artists, nurtured within the creative hub of the China Academy of Art. The project’s second stage will open in December 2024 at the Venice Biennale’s headquarters, with a third stage scheduled for autumn 2025 in Istanbul.
On Sunday, November 10th, 2024, the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, is expected to visit the exhibition.
