Dolo

Overview

Dolo extends over both banks of the Naviglio di Brenta, between Stra and Mira, and since the 15th century, it has served as a river port on account of its lock, now filled in and transformed into a small square.

We should perhaps speak of three banks and not just two, because here the canal forks to form a central island: on one branch, you can trace the lock and on the other, you can visit – in a walk through some delightful spaces – the monumental Squero, a gabled roof with trusses supported by ten brick pillars, all protecting an inclined plane at water level suitable for hauling. The word squero is typically Venetian and indicates a shipyard for repairing or even building lagoon or inland waterway boats. In the historic centre of Venice, many squeri are still active.

On the right bank in the territory of Dolo, in the locality of Sambruson, the eighteenth-century Villa Badoer-Fattoretto is surrounded by a park and houses a museum of rural culture. The connection between the historic holiday homes of the Venetian Badoer family and the current owners' love of the countryside is enshrined in one of the activities carried out on-site: the bottling of Veneto wine.
