Barga

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Centrally located in the Serchio Valley, Barga was once a Florentine enclave.

The historic centre is perfectly preserved in its medieval layout and inside there are noble-looking Renaissance buildings. Climbing along the streets of the centre you arrive at the large grassy square at the top of the hill, called l 'Arringo, where you can enjoy a view of the Apuan and Apennine mountains and where the Duomo is located (inside do not miss the ambo, a masterpiece of the second half of the 12th century) and the Palazzo Pretorio, which houses the Civic Museum of the Barga area.

A hamlet of the Municipality is Castelvecchio Pascoli, where the house where Giovanni Pascoli lived between 1895 and 1912 is located, choosing this place for the beauty of the landscape. Today the house collects the poet's manuscripts, books and diplomas.
