Calamo Fountain

Overview

The elegant fountain is also called the Tredici Cannelle (Thirteen Spouts) because of the number of bronze masks of satyrs and fauns pouring water. The name derives from an ancient marshy mouth full of reeds ("calamus") that was channeled here. It was built in the mid-16th century in Mannerist style, based on a design attributed to Pellegrino Tibaldi, who was active at the Loggia dei Mercanti at the time.  It is located in a square along Corso Mazzini, in the blocks of the historical centre below the hills where the protected green area of the Cardeto Park is located.

Today, Corso Mazzini is a promenade, with shops selling typical products and small tables in the street. The church of S. Biagio, built in late Baroque style by the Dalmatian community of Ancona, is also located here.
