Cardeto Park

Overview

As if suspended between the Adriatic and the city, the park stretches for thirty-five hectares on the hills north of the centre, accessible from near the Cathedral of St. Ciriaco or by climbing via del Faro or via Cardeto. Perhaps the most evocative of the places that the park still houses is the so-called Campo degli Ebrei, one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Europe, with over a thousand grave stones from the 15th to the 19th century.

Inside the park, signs guide you to points of interest, scenic routes and sea views. You slowly climb up to the old lighthouse, which only in 1965 stopped showing the way to sailors. He has since been succeeded by the not-so-distant New Lighthouse.

The remains of the defensive structures built on the hill include the 16th-century Bastione S. Paolo with its network of underground rooms, Fort Cardeto built by the French in 1799, and the Polveriera Castelfidardo, now restored as a multi-purpose space for meetings, shows and exhibitions.
