Circular itinerary starting from Capalbio Scalo

Circular itinerary starting from Capalbio Scalo

The route starts from Capalbio Scalo and the first jewel you encounter is the WWF Oasis Lago di Burano, from which you can admire the coastal tower of Buranaccio, the southernmost 16th-century outpost in Tuscany.

Continue north where it is impossible not to notice the Torre della Tagliata, a work of hydraulic engineering built by the Romans. At the base of the canal is a small crevice, the mysterious Spacco della regina: one legend has it that this was the secret place where Etruscan queen Ansedonia loved to bathe and from which she never returned.

A small road takes you to the foot of a hill and Villa Settefinestre, a Roman villa dating back to 100 BCE.
Follow the road in the Maremma countryside, up to the base of the hill and to Rocca Aldobrandesca di Capalbio.

At this point, 800 metres remain to the summit and a well-earned rest at the gates of the medieval town. Once there, you can enjoy a panorama of the coast from the centuries-old crenellated walls and refresh yourself with some typical Maremma cuisine.

A bike ride to discover the Tarot Garden

Leaving Capalbio behind, at Garavicchio, you will find Niki de Saint Phalle 's Tarot Garden with its large, colourful sculptures.

Return to the coast, savouring these last kilometres surrounded by nature, until the silhouette of Buranaccio’s Spanish tower tells you that the journey is over.
