Piandimeleto

Overview

It is known that Montefeltro is a historical region that does not correspond to today's administrative borders: both Le Marche and Emilia Romagna can boast of 'owning' part of it. The village and territory of Piandimeleto, the ancient Planus Mileti, are almost on the border with Tuscany, as well as part of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Interregional Park.

Verdant hills surround the village, with its medieval style centre, grid patterned streets with narrow houses and the Castle of the Counts Oliva – the same family as at the convent of Montefiorentino - at that time on excellent terms with Duke Federico of Montefeltro. A palio is still dedicated to the Counts Olivia in July each year, commemorating the 15th-century festivities in their honour.

Since we are talking about historical Italian dynasties, it is not out of place to recall that Piandimeleto Castle was rebuilt by the Oliva family after it was conquered in 1445 by the mercenary captain Francesco Sforza, who was destined a few years later to become Duke of Milan. With regard to the present-day building, it features three collections, ethnography, natural history and natural sciences, which are appreciated by visitors.
