Natural Monument Garzaia di Sant'Alessandro

Overview

The Lomellina's garzaie are small naturalistic areas created around ponds and groves inhabited by various animal and plant species. Birds typical of the agricultural and aquatic landscapes of the Po Valley meet in the protected environments of the garzaie to breed and build their nests among the meadows and shrubs. Herons and egrets, nightingales and woodpigeons, turtle doves, river nightingales and many other species fly among the elder, hawthorn, hazel and poplar trees, to name but a few particularly common plant varieties. Further down, hidden among the brambles and bumps, you may catch a glimpse of some wild rabbits or foxes.

That of S. Alessandro, in the municipality of Zeme, is one of the most frequented garzaie, but there are several other equally fascinating garzaie (such as that of Celpenchio or that of Verminesca) scattered throughout the Lomellina territory.
