Museo Nazionale Etrusco Rocca Albornoz

Overview

La Rocca Albornoz, sede del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Viterbo, su cui si stanno ultimando le tre sezioni, fu costruita nel 1354 dal Cardinale Gil Alvarez Carrillo de Albornoz. Successive demolizioni e rimaneggiamenti portarono poi Giulio II a chiamare il Bramante, artefice del cortile e della fontana centrale. Le ultime distruzioni belliche hanno poi richiesto un intervento di recupero da parte del Genio Civile compiuto dal 1960 al 1979, voluto dalla Soprintendenza B.A.A. del Lazio e dalla Soprintendenza Archeologica per l’Etruria Meridionale, che ha destinato la struttura a museo. Il pianoterra ospita attualmente la sezione "Architettura etrusca nel Viterbese", con reperti provenienti dagli scavi di Acquarossa e S. Giovenale. Al primo piano si trovano, invece, pezzi che arrivano dal centro etrusco-romano di Musarna, come il mosaico con iscrizione in alfabeto etrusco, e decorazioni scultoree e architettoniche tratte dal teatro di Ferento, con il ciclo delle Muse.
