Via Ostiense

Overview

The Via Ostiense can be reached from the MACRO by crossing the arch of the Aurelian Wall and is the heir to the road that connected the port of Rome to the centre of the Urbe, along a route defined in the 3rd century BC. It runs alongside an area that took on an industrial character due to the proximity of the river and the railway and was already designated for housing in 1931. Nearby stands the monumental Gazometro, an iron giant somenbsp;90 metres highnbsp;and overnbsp;60 metresnbsp;in diameter, nicknamed the "Industrial Colosseum" or "Modern Colosseum", another example of the city's industrial archaeology. At the foot of the structure is the former warehouse complex on the river bank, home to the Fire Brigade's specialist school.
