Vatican Gardens

Overview

Approximately half of the surface area of the Vatican State, in its western portion, is occupied by gardens, very well-kept, with fortifications, groves, lawns, kiosks, monuments, grottoes and fountains. They are Italian gardens, in many places still laid out according to the original 16th century designs, dotted with administrative buildings and guest residences. They flank the basilica and the Belvedere courtyard as they climb the Vatican hill, offering a view of Michelangelo's dome. Since 1279, they have been the resting place of the popes. Particularly evocative is the Casina Pio IV, a Renaissance structure composed of two buildings with rich decorations, bas-reliefs and stuccoes.

The gardens can only be visited with a guided tour, which is booked via the Vatican Museums website, on foot or by open-top bus.
