Overview
The Church has always had a special relationship with art, which is "like a sail that is filled with the Spirit and moves forward".
On 23 June 2023, during the meeting on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art of the Vatican Museums, in the magnificent setting of the Sistine Chapel, Pope Francis addressed the assembled artists with these words:
"You artists, then, have the ability to dream up new versions of the world, […] tointroduce novelty into history. […] You're a bit like prophets. You can see things both in depth and from afar, like sentinels who strain their eyes, peering into the horizon and discerning deeper realities. […]
Art has always been bound to the experience of beauty. [...] In true beauty, we begin to experience the desire for God."
