Testaccio Market

Overview

In the heart of Testaccio there was once the old neighbourhood market, with fruit stalls, butcher shops (the Slaughterhouse was in operation until 1921), foodstuffs and clothing. Since 2012, the market has moved to a modern multifunctional centre, located between Via Galvani and Via Franklin, in a total area of 5000 square metres and which was designed by architect Marco Rietti. It is a modern square, a geometric, minimalist structure, full of light, open on all four sides but covered and sheltered. There are stalls of all kinds and varieties: from fruit and vegetables to clothing, from accessories to books. It is well worth a visit at lunchtime: many food stalls have become stands for Roman street food, where you can enjoy a new version of traditional dishes like your grandmother makes. Try the frittate di pasta, sandwiches with meatballs with sauce and offal, sausage and chicory, fried cod fillets.
