Porta San Paolo

Overview

St Paul's gate is an imposing structure of Roman origin, isolated from the circle of the Aurelian wall for the sake of viability, framed within semicircular towers. It marked the beginning of the Via Ostiense and its name derives from its proximity to the basilica of St Paul outside the Walls. A plaque commemorates the fighting that took place there in September 1943, in resistance to the German occupation of Rome. Inside, there is the small Museum of the Via Ostiense, which illustrates the ancient Roman road by means of reliefs, prints and models of the archaeological area of Ostia.
