Basilica Santa Maria del Popolo Parish

Overview

The imposing Church of Santa Maria della Pace stands close to the Porta del Popolo near the city walls, on the ancient site of the Mausoleum of the Domizi Enobarbi, where Emperor Nero was buried. Built initially in 1099, it was enlarged in 1227 and then radically rebuilt under Sixtus IV between 1472 and 1477, most probable thanks to the contribution of Andrea Bregno, who entrusted its custody to the Augustinians of the Lombard congregation. Later, from the beginning of the 19th century, Valadier modified the structure, knocking down the old convent, inside the square and up the Pincio hill, and adding Baroque decorations to the interior and façade.
