MACRO

Overview

The MACRO is the main centre for contemporary art in the capital and was created in 2002 following the reorganisation of the capital's structures for the promotion of contemporary art. It was a former Peroni industrial plant, active until 1971, designed in the early 20th century by Gustavo Giovannoni. As interesting as the works on display and the events organised, is the futuristic structure and the red and black interior. French architect Odile Decq has largely retained the original structure, but enriched it with sophisticated mirrored glass and steel elements. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions and its own permanent collection of various artists active in Rome since the 1960s. Among them are Accardi, Dorazio, Festa, Leoncillo, Perilli, Schifano: their works are exhibited periodically according to targeted itineraries. In addition to the exhibition area, spaces dedicated to services and the public include the foyer, the fiery red auditorium, the large terrace with restaurant, the cafeteria, the bookshop.
