Aldobrandesca Fortress

Overview

The Aldobrandesca fortress is at the heart of the history and identity of Suvereto, which continues to protect from the top of the headland on which it stands. The building was erected from the 13th century on the remains of previous fortifications by order of the Aldobrandeschi family and is one of several castles that bear witness to the power the family assumed in mediaeval Tuscany. Over the centuries, the fortress has undergone various renovations, until its final abandonment in the 19th century. Following restoration in early 2000, it is now part of a public park and hosting a museum in which it is possible to retrace the history of the village and the personalities who influenced it, including Emperor Arrigo VII of Luxembourg and Princess Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi. The museum also provides an insight into the regional delicacies, hosting an exhibition dedicated to the wines of the Suvereto DOCG.
