Populonia

Overview

Populonia, is today a small hamlet of the municipality of Piombino, but in the past it was an important Etruscan city. The oldest remains are still clearly visible in the numerous archaeological sites scattered across the area, while the adjacent mediaeval village was rebuilt from the 14th century onwards after a long period of abandonment. The main monument is the 14th century fortress of the same name, consisting of a tower surrounded by thick walls, which is well-preserved and can be visited: climbing up the tower you can enjoy a beautiful view of the nearby Gulf of Baratti, a well-known seaside and nature attraction.

As well as the historical and cultural aspect, Populonia is surrounded by the natural parks of the Val di Cornia that offer the possibility of immersing oneself in nature along the final stretch of the Costa degli Etruschi, which from the Piombino coastline overlooks the Island of Elba
