Parish of San Giusto

Overview

The parish of S. Giusto is located near the southern gate and is dedicated to San Giusto, bishop of Volterra. Hagiographic sources recount that the saint left Africa in the 6th century to escape persecution against Christians. The church was built on an earlier Christian structure and has a Latin cross layout and a single nave. It is first mentioned in the 10th century, a period in which it served as a cathedral, but an inscription inside the building testifies that it was not completed until 1189 by the masters Baron Amico and Bono di Calci.

The Romanesque style is evident in the gabled façade and in the portal, surmounted by an ornate lintel and flanked by two columns on the top of which are represented lions clinging to human busts.

Inside the church is a valuable 12th-century baptismal font and an 18th-century pipe organ by Domenico Francesco Mazzoni.

The bell tower suffered heavy damage due to lightning and is in its current form after its restoration in 1884.
