Cathedral of San Cerbone

Overview

On a stepped podium, it was erected in Pisan forms between the 12th and 13th centuries on top of a pre-existing church and is dedicated to St Cerbo. It has a splendid Romanesque façade, a portal moved to the left and, curiously, the blind arcades on the right are narrower than those on the left. The bell tower, original until the first mullioned windows, was partially rebuilt in the early 20th century. Five episodes from the life of the saint are depicted on the portal architrave. The interior has three naves with a sail roof resting on tall columns. The reliefs of the baptismal font - a single travertine boulder - at the beginning of the right aisle are magnificent. The marble tabernacle above the basin is from 1447. Behind the high altar, in the choir, the marble ark of San Cerbone, sculpted by Goro di Gregorio in 1324, is a perfect example of Sienese sculpture, while in the chapel of the Madonna, the 14th-century altarpiece of the Madonna delle Grazie by Duccio di Buoninsegna can be admired.
