Lake Bilancino

Overview

Outdoor fun in Mugello

Created to solve the water supply problems of the Mugello area, Lake Bilancino is an artificial bathing reservoir that covers the equivalent of 5 square kilometres, near Barberino di Mugello. It is located west of state road 65 of the Futa, an important road connecting Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, and in the immediate vicinity of the A1 motorway exit.

Located in the centre of an area of significant landscape value, filled with forests, crops, parishes and farmhouses, it is a tourist destination that is highly appreciated for its extensive offering of outdoor activities, starting with sports fishing. Among the fish fauna present, there are carps, trout, pikes, crucian carps, common bleak, and also tench, eels and perch. The lake also offers visitors the chance to practice canoeing, sailing and windsurfing. Along the banks, there are pedestrian and cycling routes, as well as an equipped beach that offers umbrellas, deck chairs, sunbeds and a refreshment service.

In the surroundings you cannot miss the Medici Villa of Cafaggiolo with its sixteenth-century stables and the large surrounding forest, and the Medici Villa of Trebbio, with its terraced garden. Also worth a visit is the medieval Borgo San Lorenzo, one of the most important villages in the Val di Sieve. Here, the altarpiece of Our Lady of Borgo San Lorenzo is preserved, which is attributed to the young Giotto.
