Borgo San Lorenzo

Overview

In the heart of the Val di Sieve

About 30 kilometres northeast of Florence, among green hills and Medici villas, is Borgo San Lorenzo, one of the most noteworthy villages in the Val di Sieve. Founded in the 10th century, where the ancient Roman city of Anneianum once stood, it still preserves evidence of the ancient route in the Pieve di San Lorenzo, founded in 934 and later rebuilt between the 12th and 13th centuries. Here, you can admire the Madonna di Borgo San Lorenzo by the young Giotto. Do not miss the fourteenth-century Palazzo del Podestà, which displays the coats of arms of all the Florentine noble families who ruled the city. Among the many noble residences, Villa Pecori Giraldi, which houses theMuseum of Chinese Manufacturing, is worth a visit. Here you can admire vases, mugs, stoneware porcelain and porcelain, for which the country is famous.

The surrounding countryside is dotted with ancient buildings, such as the Church of Santa Maria in Pulicciano, the Church of San Giovanni Maggiore and the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix of Miracles. Of note is the Rural Museum in the Casa d'Erci in Grezzano, a large farmhouse with a fine collection of old agricultural equipment, within the forest complex of Giogo Casaglia.

We recommend a bike tour around the artificial lake of Bilancino and in the countryside between Vicchio and Dicomano. The route has no significant slopes and can be undertaken in any season of the year.
