Sanctuary of Saint Romedius

Overview

The sanctuary is the centuries-old building, product of the legend about thehermit Romedius, who apparently retired here in meditation in the company of a bear. In the midst of the scenery, an enclosure reminds us of the vicissitudes of imprisoning a brown bear unsuitable for living in the wild. The place, which has existed since the 12th century, consists of 6 overlapping chapels from different eras, connected by more than a hundred steps.

At the beginning, the 13th-century hospice is flanked by the late 15th-century chapel of Saints Romedius and George (1487) and the chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, an old votive offering from the First World War. The late Gothic church of St. Michael dates from the early 16th century, and the chapel of the Deposition from two decades later. In the latter, also known as the main church, the 11th-century Aricarda portal remains, giving access to the chapel of St Nicholas with its 17th-century frescoes. At the top of the cliff, the relics of the early hermit lie in the chapel of St. Romedius amidst the remains of Romanesque frescoes.

The sanctuary can be reached by a walk that starts from the Rhaetian Museum of Sanzeno, along a beautiful path carved into the rock on the path of a 19th-century irrigation canal.
