Coredo

Overview

Another of Trentino's castles is Coredo, with the white and red wooden windows that are so typical of northern Tyrol. It does not have the fortified appearance of many of its counterparts, but rather that of an inhabited building that has undergone various adaptations over the centuries. The castle and village are located on the eastern slope of the Non Valley, upstream of the SS 43 valley floor. Worth seeing in the village is Casa Marta, a beautiful Venetian-style palace of 16th-century origin, where the municipality has set up collections of peasant ethnography and popular costumes.

In about ten kilometres, you will reach the meadows and forests of the plateau around Passo Predaia, about 500 metres higher than Coredo. It is perfect terrain for hiking trails and cross-country skiing in winter. Cyclists, too, find plenty to do along a possible circuit of over 20 kilometres from the village up to the pass and then back down via Tres. Here, you can make a stop to see the church of Sant'Agnese, another where the artistic dynasty of the Baschenis left its frescoes.

The turreted mass of Castel Bragher is halfway up the coast, not far from the descent from Tres to the state road. It is an absolutely remarkable building, not just because it preserves the most important private archive in the region. It is, though, a private property: it is still owned by the family that once owned Thun Castle. No visits.
