Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Natural Park

Overview

Trekking in the Regional Park of Gola della Rossa and Frasassi

The Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Park is a wooded protected area of great value, encompassing historical and artistic beauty and spectacular nature covering more than 10,000 hectares. It is headquartered in Serra San Quirico but also has other 'homes' in Arcevia and Castelletta di Fabriano and at the former San Vittore di Genga mill, and there are numerous paths (35 official ones) that are more or less easy to follow - some even for persons with reduced motor or sensory capabilities with ramps, tactile maps, guide ropes and other aids, as in the case of the Sentino River Greenway) -, allowing them to experience the park at 360 . Accompanied by expert guides, by mountain bike, on foot and wearing comfortable shoes (trekking shoes are preferable), armed with a torch, or in a canoe (the more adventurous can also go rafting), you will discover well-preserved hermitages, sanctuaries and abbeys, such as San Vittore delle Chiuse or Sant'Elena, downstream in the Gola della Rossa, or the sanctuary of Santa Maria infra Saxa, carved into the rock, with the Tempietto di Valadier. Jewels of bygone eras immersed in unspoilt nature where you can observe (and why not photograph) reptile birds, deer, roe deer, wild boar, badgers, porcupines, hares, barn owls and eagles moving at ease in what is their natural habitat; the vegetation here is also remarkable and you can admire holm oaks, maples, varieties of pine and fir and even cypresses. And what can we say about the fascination aroused by the rocky, limestone walls of the numerous gorges, ideal for climbing, and the karstic caves such as the Vernino and the majestic Frasassi caves, probably the most exciting experience of all, a unique and enchanted place made up of communicating tunnels, small caves alternating with gigantic caves, small lakes surmounted by very high vaults, majestic stalactites and columns of white rock.
