Genga

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Within the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Nature Park and surrounded by woods, the village of Genga stands on a hill in the upper valley of the Esino river. Nature has undoubtedly been kind to this territory, because in addition to the beauty of the surrounding mountains, to be discovered through paths and trails, the territory is famous for the Frasassi caves, an unmissable and spectacular complex of karst cavities, one of the grandest underground routes in the world (just think that the largest cavity seems to contain the Duomo of Milan).

Among the caves and the historic centre of Genga, the abbey of San Vittore delle Chiuse, one of the most important Romanesque monuments in the Region, the hamlet of Pierosara linked to a curious local legend and the sanctuary of the Madonna di Frasassi (Infrasaxa) and the temple of Valadier are worth a visit. In the historic centre of Genga, enclosed within the walls of the medieval castle, do not miss the 'Art, History, Territory' museum, where the masterpieces of the ancient church of San Clemente are exhibited, a true treasure chest of art and history with works by Antonio da Fabriano.

Some traditional dishes are to be enjoyed, such as vincisgrassi, pappardelle with wild boar and polenta with wild boar sauce and products, such as ciauscolo salami and crescia.
