Prehistoric Museum of Isolino

Overview

The oldest prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement in the Alpine Arc

Near the western shore of Lake Varese, in the municipality of Biandronno, you can visit the impressive Prehistoric Museum of Isolino Virginia.

The area, which is included in the UNESCO list of “Prehistoric pile-dwelling sites in the Alps”, is rich in artefacts documenting human presence since ancient times and offers visitors an educational trail with the Prehistoric Museum.

Although small in size, the museum allows visitors to take an in-depth leap back in time, starting with the room on the ground floor, which welcomes guests with a film on the long history of Isolino Virginia, the oldest prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement in the Alpine Arc.

The exhibition is complemented by explanatory panels, reconstructive drawings and artefacts stored in glass cases, allowing us to reconstruct the daily life of our ancestors. There is also a fascinating reconstruction of a Neolithic dwelling, a life-sized hut, full of bows, arrows and pottery.
