Sartirana Lomellina

Overview

The village of Sartirana Lomellina is located at the western end of the province of Pavia, not far from the left bank of the river Po and the Piedmontese border. It is an essential stop on a tour of Lomellina, especially for a visit to its ancient castle.

The fortress, founded by the Visconti family, dominates the entire municipal area and is flanked by the parish church and an extensive parade ground where military exercises were held.

Bounded by a large moat, the oldest sections of the Sartirana Lomellina castle date back to the 14th century. It was a time when the mighty round towers and large walls that can still be seen today served a defensive purpose to protect the structure from enemy attack.

The Sartirana Arte Foundation manages the interior of the castle by offering one of the most complete and varied museum exhibitions in Lomellina. For example, the collection of contemporary silver and artist's jewellery stored in the castle is remarkable. Moreover, Sartirana Lomellina is known not only for the vestiges of its past but also for the handcrafted jewellery made by local goldsmiths.
