Civita di Bagnoregio

Overview

Civita di Bagnoregio, a charming village located in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, is known as ‘the dying city’ due to its fragile location on a tuff hill subject to constant erosion. Founded by the Etruscans over 2,500 years ago, the village has seen several dominations, including Roman, Gothic and Longobard, before coming under the authority of the Papal State.

Access to the village is through Porta Santa Maria, the only survivor of the original five gates, which introduces visitors to an intricate labyrinth of medieval alleys, small squares and ancient stone buildings. Among the most interesting sights are the Church of San Donato, which dominates the main square, and the Geological and Landslide Museum, housed in the Palazzo Alemanni, which offers insights into the area's unique geology and erosion issues.

The extraordinary geological conformation and timeless atmosphere of Civita have inspired internationally renowned artists and filmmakers. The famous Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, for example, said he was inspired by this village for the setting of his film Laputa - Castle in the Sky.

Despite the challenges of erosion that threaten its stability, Civita di Bagnoregio continues to enchant visitors from all over the world. This extraordinary village offers a unique experience, where history, art and nature come together harmoniously in a setting of incomparable beauty.
