The Verano Monumental Cemetery

Overview

With an extension of about 83 hectares, Rome's monumental cemetery has 9 entrances, including the quadriportico entrance beside the Basilica of St Lawrence Outside the Walls, which leads to the historic section. Along the tree-lined avenues there are 80 signs showing a map of the area, which is useful for orientation as there are so many tombs of well-known individuals. Just to name a few of those who rest in peace in the Verano: Giuseppe Gioachino Belli, Trilussa, Ungaretti, Giacomo Balla, Peppino and Eduardo de Filippo, Grazia Deledda, Alberto Moravia, Vittorio De Sica, Alberto Sordi, Nino Manfredi, Marcello Mastroianni, Rino Gaetano, Bud Spencer, and Monica Vitti.

Some of the tombs are true works of art, created by important Italian architects and sculptors, including Marcello Piacentini, Ettore Ximenes, Gaetano Koch and Pietro Canonica, and providing a social cross-section of the city and an overview of the tastes and aesthetic trends of each era. Gothic, Neoclassical, Eclectic, Futurist and Art Nouveau funerary monuments can be seen, and the series of funerary portraits by Filippo Severati, painted on lava, stands out for its originality. Another striking feature is the tufa terracing, known as the Scogliera del Monte, into which rows of marble memorial stones are set.
