Castello Caetani di Sermoneta

Overview

The fascination of history and cinema

The Castello Caetani castle towers over and protects Sermoneta with its towers, ramparts, military quarters and cisterns. Founded by the Annibaldi family in the 13th century, little remains of the original building. However, you can admire the keep and a counter-tower known as the “maschietto” (little keep).

It was later extended by the noble Caetani family, who built the “Camere Pinte” (Painted Rooms). After many ups and downs and a period of neglect, it was restored in the 20th century and is now managed by the Roffredo Caetani Foundation.

The castle is open all year round, except on Thursdays. You can retrace the castle’s history and imagine walking on the set of famous films shot there, from Nothing Left to Do but Cry starring Benigni and Troisi to Tale of Tales by Matteo Garrone.

Don’t miss the hidden secrets of Sermoneta, a true jewel of the province of Latina. You can stroll under the arches of the Loggia dei Mercanti, amid a delicate play of light and shadow. There are countless places of worship, including the Church of Saint Mary, the Convent of Saint Francis and the 12th-century Jewish Synagogue
