Fiuggi

Overview

The town is located at the foot of the Ernici mountains, perched on a hilltop surrounded by green woods. The medieval town became known for its beneficial waters, mentioned by Boniface VIII and Michelangelo Buonarroti. Today, the spa resort has two centres: Fiuggi Città, with its steeply-sloping medieval centre and Art Nouveau building of the former Casino, built in 1910. To the south, beyond a narrow valley, lies the second town: Fiuggi Fonte. This is the best-known tourist area, and it has a number of hotels and spa centres, including the Thermal Baths, built in a lush green setting around the Bonifacio VIII and Anticolana springs, from which flow the cool mineral spring waters that changed the fortunes of the town, as well as of Pope Boniface VIII and Michelangelo, who were cured of their kidney stones.
