Gulf of Policastro

Overview

An inlet touching Campania, Basilicata and Calabria

Nestled between the Punta degli Infreschi bay, in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, andCapo Scalea, theGulf of Policastro is an inlet on the Tyrrhenian Sea that spans the coastlines of Campania, Basilicata and Calabria. Explore the area by boat: from the water you can see the rich Mediterranean vegetation and the medieval villages overlooking the sea.

Beautiful Sapri and its characteristic Specola, an astronomical observatory from the beginning of the 20th century, is worth a stop. Within an hour's drive you can reach Marina di Camerota, a popular destination for beach tourism due to its sandy beach, enclosed within small inlets in the rock. Further south, you'll find Maratea, considered "the Lucanian pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea", thanks to its breathtaking scenery and unspoiled nature. The historic town, also known as "The Castle", is located on Monte San Biagio, at an altitude of 640 metres. A pedestrian path takes you to the top, where we recommend you visit the Basilica of San Biagio, built in the sixth century on an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, and the imposing 22-metre-high Statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Further inland, do not miss the Pertosa Caves, a complex of karst cavities dug by a navigable underground river. The remains of a stilt house village from the 2nd millennium BC are preserved inside it.
