NEXT - New Exhibition Former SAIM Tobacco Factory, Cafasso Village

Overview

The former Tobacco Factory in Borgo Cafasso is a complex found in the village of Cafasso, near the archaeological area of Paestum. Of great historical and cultural value is the industrial archaeological site stands as the "symbol of the Piana del Sele", as described by Gillo Dorfles, a discerning and sophisticated artist of the 20th century.

Built at the beginning of the last century and developed around the production facilities, first in the fruit and vegetable sector, and then in the tobacco industry, the rural centre immediately had a social as well as a productive value; a revival for the area in terms of employment: the tobacco workers were the true workforce of the tobacco factory. A successful example of industrial archaeology, which bears witness to the progressive evolution of technology and the consequent change in the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The location had a further social function at the time of the landings during the Second World War, used by the Allied Forces as Commander Clark's Headquarters and later as a military hospital.

Now public, upgraded and enhanced, it enriches the city's public interest container through the activities of the Archaeological Tourism Exchange, overcoming the isolation of Borgo Cafasso and transforming it into an attractive hub for tourists in the city of Templi, with temporary and permanent exhibitions designed to promote local production lines.
