Along the slopes of Gran Sasso
Among the highest peaks of the Apennines and the Adriatic, there is a hilly area covered with rows of Montepulciano, the area of origin of the Teraman Hills Montepulciano d 'Abruzzo DOCG. A landscape made pleasant by the rolling hills full of abbeys, hermitages and perched villages, such as the medieval town of Castellalto, which has two historical centres, to continue in Roseto degli Abruzzi in the Borsacchio Natural Reserve, a coastal oasis for the protection of the fauna and flora of the Abruzzo coastline. To fully enjoy the rich landscape of this area, treat yourself to a glass of red, the Montepulciano, the main vine of the region, which gives off complex hints of red fruits and spicy notes, giving you an intense and velvety sip for the palate.
Borgo di Controguerra
The itinerary to discover the wines of Abruzzo continues northwards, to the Marche border, in the picturesque village of Controguerra, one of the most famous areas of viticulture and the perfect destination for food and wine events. In the Controguerra Doc Rosso, Montepulciano meets Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, while Trebbiano and Passerina blend in white. The clay soils and the thermal excursions produced by the presence of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, give life to fruity and red white wines of great value, for intensity and aromas, perfect paired with game.
Chieti and the nuances of Montepulciano
The tour continues to the south arriving in Tollo, a small municipality in the province of Chieti where viticulture is a tradition. Here you can find the youngest denomination in Abruzzo, the DOCG Tullum to be tasted in the elegance of the red Montepulciano and, for white wine lovers, in a glass of Pecorino or Passerina. Don't miss a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo, which houses the largest collection of ancient treasures in the region, and the historic centre of Chieti, which can also be visited on foot. Reputed one of the oldest cities on the peninsula, founded according to the legend of the famous warrior Achilles, Chieti marvels at the enchanting views so much so that it is nicknamed 'the Terrace of Abruzzo'. In the surrounding area, Montepulciano returns as the protagonist, but this time in a pink version in the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC. A wine that is a symbol of the Region, capable of conquering the palate with its delicate floral notes and freshness.
Trabocchi Coast
Inland lies the Maiella Natural Park, where the wild nature of the Apennines contains the unmistakable villages set in the rock. From the gentle hills on the coast, we arrive at Ortona, a medieval town overlooking the sea, from which the Costa dei Trabocchi extends southwards. The name derives from the characteristic wooden stilts that have remained suspended over time, the overflows, which preserve centuries of maritime tradition and offer the opportunity to taste flavoursome recipes from the local gastronomy. To be tasted is a Trebbiano d 'Abruzzo Doc glass, a vine already known in Roman times and a source of pride for this region, which surprises with its aroma, made more complex by the spicy hints in the Superiore and Riserva versions.
