Adria

Overview

The town that gave the sea its name

The town takes its name from the nearby sea, the Adriatic, and quickly developed into an important trading hub thanks to its strategic position. Adria, an elegant and attractive town in the Polesine, is one of the must-see destinations on your tour through the province of Rovigo. The historic centre may be small but is an impressive sight nevertheless, traversed by the Canal Bianco, linking the town to the River Po and the sea.

The perfect place to enjoy a pleasant and unhurried stroll, savouring every street corner. One landmark you will certainly encounter is the Basilica of St Mary of the Assumption, also known as the Basilica of the Tomb, since this is the burial place of Quinto Tizio Sertoriano, an illustrious Roman. While you are here, take the time to visit the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and venture down into the crypt, decorated with fine Byzantine frescoes.

To discover the history of Adria and the secrets of its glorious past, the best place to go is the National Archaeological Museum. The route through the exhibition takes you from the Bronze Age through to the end of the Roman era and contains several priceless exhibits including a collection of brightly-coloured Roman glassware and the Tomb of the Chariot.
