Piegaro

Overview

The small village of Piegaro is part of the Mountain Community of the Trasimeno Mountains and is in fact located between the lake and Città della Pieve.

Surrounded by rolling hills cloaked in holm oak, chestnut and pine forests, Piegaro overlooks the Nestore river.

The charming old town has a characteristic medieval layout. The original core, in the highest part of the village, is surrounded by walls dating back to the Roman period and rebuilt in the 12th century.

Don\'t miss a visit to the Glass Museum, a testimony to the ancient local art, housed within the old glassworks complex, an important example of industrial archaeology.

The museum tour is spread over three floors and gives the opportunity to admire the rooms where work was once carried out. In the basement, one can observe perhaps the most striking element of the museum: a large emerald-green cast, a large quantity of glass that, probably, poured into the earth while still incandescent, testifies to the precise moment when the glassworks were decommissioned, in 1968.

Take the time to participate in craft workshops organised by Sistema Museo that allow you to fully immerse yourself in this ancient art.

Near Piegaro, then, the Palaeontological Museum of Pietrafitta is worth a visit, which also preserves memories of mining activity in the area and houses one of the richest collections of fossil vertebrates in Italy.
