Parco del Monte Subasio - Museo Paleontologico

Overview

The history and fossil findings in the heart of Umbria

Created in 1995 and located in an area covering four municipalities in the province of Perugia, the Parco del Monte Subasio is one of the many protected natural areas in the Umbria region.

On the slopes and summit of the "mountain of Assisi", a number of fossils have been found, which are now on display at the Ecological Laboratory of Geo-Palaeontology, in a permanent exhibition curated by the G.U.M.P, Gruppo Umbro Mineralogico Paleontologico. The exhibition is divided into three rooms by subject area, containing information on geological eras and exhibits from all corners of the world.

Mount Subasio and its surroundings offer not only fossil finds and educational trails, but also numerous outdoor activities surrounded by greenery. Like the suggestive itineraries that wind along the Orrido delle Carceri or the Grotta del Subasio, an 18-metre shaft that leads to a cavity about 30 metres deep.
