Prato Allo Stelvio

Overview

Excursions between Romanesque churches and monasteries

A small mountain municipality in the Val Venosta, divided between the hamlets of Prato and Montechiaro, Prato allo Stelvio lies at the foot of the Stelvio National Park, which with its unspoilt nature is home to a varied and rare birdlife. It is the ideal starting point for hiking, mountain or ski climbing in the Alps.

Situated along one of the most important trade routes that crossed the Alps, it has a very ancient history as archaeological findings prove. In addition, there are places of worship and culture such as the Romanesque churches of S Giovanni and S Giorgio in Agumes, monasteries and forts, such as the ancient Montechiaro Castle from the 13th century.

At a distance of 12 kilometres, you can reach Trafoi, where we recommend the hiking trail to the sanctuary 'Le Tre Fontane' at the foot of the Ortler mountain. An experience for the whole family to the so-called Sacred Springs.

The Stelvio glacier ski area is one of the largest in the Alps for summer skiing. It stretches from the Stelvio Pass to Mt Cristallo and offers skiers a spectacular view of the mountains of the Ortler range, with 14 peaks over 3,000 metres.
