Three Peaks of Lavaredo

Overview

It is the natural park that includes the most famous and iconic panorama of the Sexten Dolomites and perhaps of all the Dolomites: that of the north face of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, mythical peaks for climbers from all over the world since 1869 when the Cima Grande (2999 metres) was conquered for the first time. They stand on the border with Veneto, on the southern edge of the protected area that also offers unique thrills over the rest of its territory: over 11,000 hectares between the Puster Valley to the north, the Sexten Valley to the east and the Landro Valley to the west, dotted with other important peaks, such as Mount Paterno, the Three Scarperi, the Popera and the Croda dei Baranci. The Tre Cime Nature Park also encompasses groves of larch and stone pine, meadows, screes and debris fields, small high-mountain lakes and a rich fauna of chamois and roe deer, golden eagles and imperial ravens, not just rocky peaks and vertical walls. The headquarters are in Dobbiaco, in the elegant former Grand Hotel, but the park also extends into the municipalities of San Candido and Sesto and offers valuable footholds at altitude in its refuges, places with legendary names for mountain enthusiasts, such as the Antonio Locatelli Refuge, the Auronzo Refuge and the Zsigmondy-Comici Refuge.
